Clostridium botulinum (a bacteria) produces a class of chemical compounds known as “toxins” including Botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is processed and purified to obtain a sterile product suitable for specific therapeutic uses.
Botox injections are effective in treating excessive sweating under the arms or hands. Injected toxin prevents the secretion signal to the sweat glands. Larger amounts of Botox are used to treat hyperhidrosis compared to the treatment of facial wrinkles.
The effect of Botox lasts for about four months.
Botox injections are customized according to patient needs.
Alternative treatments
One option would be not to undergo to medical treatment by Botox. Another option would be removal of the sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis can be also treated by a thoracic surgery consisting of sympathetic nerve transection that contributes to hyperhidrosis.
